THE PROJECT: According to the UNDP (2019), Burundi is ranked 185th out of 189 countries on the Human Development Index. The provinces of Makamba and Rutana are considered the breadbasket of the country. However, regular political crises leading to massive displacement of the population, climate change, difficulties of access of the population to productive tools, high illiteracy rate, ... all this leads to a decline in agricultural production and a lack of dynamism and economic opportunities.

OBJECTIVE: By 2026, 6,400 new jobs, for women and young people, promoting an agro-ecological and environmentally friendly transition, are created. The targeted sectors are those in agriculture and agricultural support services such as handicrafts.

SOCIETAL IMPACT: The strengthening of the agroecological transition allows for a 30% increase in the agricultural yield of producers. The proportion of young people and women working in agricultural support occupations increases by +- 50% thanks to the project. An indirect impact is the increase in the number of women in decision-making bodies at community level. These different elements allow the beneficiary households of the project to increase their savings and improve their living conditions.
