Digital Energy Challenge

The aim of the Challenge is to support the development of innovative solutions likely to promote better access to energy, facilitate the integration of renewable energies and improve the performance of energy operators.

 

With the aim of contributing to the United Nations' sustainable development goal of ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy,AFD has set up the Digital Energy Facility, a program co-financed by theEuropean Union, with the participation of ADEME, to support the digitization and modernization of the energy sector.

 

BENEFICIARIES

  • Start-ups in the pre-seed or embryonic stages of development. NGOs can apply in the start-up category (see start-up eligibility criteria).
  • Public energy operators, in partnership with suppliers of innovative technologies and/or services (see eligibility criteria for energy operators).

 

PROJECTS

  • The2024 call for projects is dedicated to projects located in Africa (see the list of eligible countries).
  • Projects must be based on digital technology (telecommunications, IT or cloud). They must be innovative, either intrinsically, or in relation to the local market or country situation. Finally, projects must be locally anchored, with project management activities established in the project country.
  • Projects must fit into one of the 3 themes: Universal access to electricity and mini-grids / Efficient power grid management / Resilience and decarbonization of power systems.

 

AMOUNT / PROPOSED SUPPORT

  • A financial contribution in the form of a grant for the purchase of equipment and software, or to cover training needs, recruitment costs for start-ups, or the purchase of products/services from suppliers of innovative technologies and/or services for energy operators.
  • Technical assistance for all energy operators, and for selected start-ups on a case-by-case basis, such as project management support, strategic and technical expertise, or accounting and reporting assistance.
  • Bootcamp-type workshops involving multi-sector experts to support project implementation, promote synergies between prizewinners and share best practices.
  • Increased visibility for the project thanks to communication campaigns led by AFD and widely relayed on social networks during the selection phase, the awards ceremony, the bootcamp and for some time after these events.
