Every year, drinking water is a vital issue for the 278 million people who are victims of war or natural disasters. Increased by climate change, this scourge obliges humanitarian actors to devote substantial financial resources to solutions for access to drinking water. The increase in needs requires new sustainable and economical solutions.
Traditionally, NGOs have provided drinking water through collective water treatment structures that are not adapted to the current environmental and societal challenges.
Fonto de Vivo has the deep desire to provide concrete and efficient solutions to supply drinking water to people in need in a simple way. Designed specifically for humanitarian aid, ORISA® purifiers filter all surface water from biological contamination by simply pumping it manually. With no programmed obsolescence, they guarantee daily use by a family for at least 5 years, thanks to an innovative and patented permanent maintenance system.
The ORISA® family water purifier is the result of collaboration with major French and international NGOs (Médecins sans frontières, the French Red Cross, Handicap International, Médecins du monde, Solidarités international, Premières Urgences). It is designed to last, it is economical, repairable and recyclable.
With its purifier, Fonto de vivo is at the heart of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN to provide universal access to drinking water by 2030.
What we can contribute
Product, service or intervention proposed
Our innovation is the use of hollow fibre membrane water ultrafiltration technology. These membranes are usually used in industry for the production of drinking water, food or pharmaceuticals. Their performance is maintained over time thanks to electronic backflushing systems that allow clean water to be regularly passed in the opposite direction of the fibres to remove the dirt. We have adapted this cleaning to a mechanical, manual and compact system to ensure the longest possible life for the purifier's filter media. A French patent extended to Europe, South Africa and China has been filed on this concept.
The innovation also concerns the use of this type of device within rural and isolated families: having the possibility of producing autonomously and instantaneously 2L of purified water/minute which leads the populations to store dirty water rather than clean water (much simpler) and to have purified water for their daily needs: drinking water, hygiene, food. A simple product that can be used by children or adults, and whose simple maintenance and repair can be done locally by the beneficiaries.
Marketing innovation: a product specially designed for the humanitarian sector which tends to buy products normally dedicated to camping, outdoor or other applications without fully satisfying the needs of the beneficiaries. A robust, durable product, without programmed obsolescence, made in France with food-grade materials... at an affordable cost so that as many beneficiaries as possible can have it. A product that will last about 12 years (with the change of the membranes) for an annual cost of about 14€/year (FCA France price)

Our expectations/interest in creating a partnership
Fonto de vivo's products are by nature dedicated to export, through NGOs or international organisations. The company's business model is based on the direct sale of water purifiers to humanitarian organisations. The NGOs take care of their deployment to the beneficiaries. Fonto de vivo wishes to deepen its export strategy in order to widen its targets and strengthen its presence among all the actors involved in the issue of access to drinking water: national and local governments, corporate foundations, contractors, specialised distributors, civil security.
Fonto de vivo plans to open markets by country, working with local representatives led by a national representative. Depending on the depth of the market and local needs, the aim is to create subsidiaries that will work in collaboration with the French head office to provide marketing, project management and local marketing. These subsidiaries may be run by local NGOs.
It should be noted that our purifiers are designed to be repairable with an estimated total life span of 12 years and an estimated cost per year of approximately 14€ for a family of 5 (FCA price ex France)
Sponsorship can also be considered by companies, whether or not they are based in the countries of intervention. It becomes a CSR tool for companies that wish to have a social impact.
